Liverpool Football Formation

Creation DateFebruary 21, 2013

Lineup (3-4-3)

GK · CBR · CBL · CB · WBR · WBL · MLC · MRC · AMC · FRC · FLC

When you use this formation you NEED fast and fit wing backs who will be subbed at around 60mins due to the vast amount of physical activity they will encounter.
OFFENSIVELY
The aim of this formation is to play the ball from the centre backs easily then through the wing backs or midfielders easily the three CB's allows for a degree of defence and the two central midfielders work together if one joins up with the attack then the other sits back and mops up anything that has come out of the oppositions half. One problem is getting the overlap play on the wings and defending the wings when they attack.
These problems can be solved by the use of the three man attack which allows for versatillity upfront as WBR goes down the wing with the ball then FRC goes past him on the outside drawing defenders away and creating space then the ball can go into the box towards the FRC, AMC and one of the MCR or MCL this allows numbers in around the box with the WBL acting as a mop on the far left hand side chasing the ball or collecting an overhit cross, he can also present himself as a late arriving target to the far post which you can hit.
DEFENSIVELY
When defending you can use two techniques one is an unorthadox back four(1) and another is following the runners(2). When using this formation the wings are often hit with long balls behind the back three to make them turn and get confused with the numbers also the overlaps work especially well with only having one full back as it were. (1) If you are defending from the start of the match then you may find it easier to set up as a back four with a sweeper in front so you have WBR then CBR and CBL then WBL with the CB acting as a sweeper or whichever defender of the three is most suitable for the role. You then have two banks of three in front of the back four with the front three of FLC, FRC, and AMC acting is a 'wolf pack' and hunting down the ball and pressurising the back four then the two MCL and MCR with the sweeper in behind move across the back 5 and act as a moving wall and follow the runners in the overlaps and help out the WBR and WBL with the front three dropping back when neccessary. This overall helps acheive a secure centre with the abillity to reinforce the wings from MCR or MCL or by the sweeper dropping in to form a back three and the WBR and WBL going for the ball on the left.
(2)When defending with this formation you need to play a high line so that your forwards can break easily and help defned the situation easliy, ie your back 3 and WB's need to be no less than 10meters from the edge of their own penalty area. Following the runners involves very hard working and decent defensive forwards. The forwards NEED to track the full backs should they go on the charge down the wings in support of their winger, when they get to the FB they must stay 'touch tight' with him and then be talked to constantly by the MC's and CB's to see whether they can pass the FB on to help the AMC and the other FLC as they will be pressuring the ball up top trying to force pressure upon the CB's and causing them to over hit a pass or mispace it to one of your players. Say they attack down the right hand side, up against your left hand side. They get the ball to their winger and he is one on one with your WBL, the WBL needs to get close and not allowing him to get a run on him and therefore giving the winger a chance to get past him, as the winger receives the ball the FBR will be charging forward to support him therefore the FLC needs to follow or the AMC will need to follow him and offfer some help for the WBL. Then the winger and FB are man marked and therefore not allowed any space to move where they can be tgackled and the ball released into the area where the FB was. In an ideal situation the ball will never get to the winger because the AMC, FLC and FRC will be pressuring he ball high up field and there will be no way for the ball to get to the winger.
