Santos were not one of Brazil's major clubs when the young Pelé joined them, their Vila Belmiro ground only had a capacity of 25,000, but with him they became two times champions of South America and then twice champions of the world. Beating two great Benfica and AC Milan sides (also featured on this website) over two legs, including a 5-2 away result against Benfica in 1962, they countered any potential arguments about the relative merits of South American football.
Pelé was of course instrumental in this team but this was not a one-man show. He lined up with his Brazil international teammates Zito and Gilmar, was joined in attack by Pepe (one of the next wingers if all time despite losing his Brazil place to Zagallo) and formed an impressive partnership with Coutinho. Santos would play friendlies all around the world with Pelé in the side until 1973, later being joined by other illustrious Brazil national team-mates, but this was when the team were at their competitive best.
