The formation Wolverhampton Wanderers used during their 2-0 defeat at Molineux to Manchester City on 22 April 2012. Sadly, this was not enough to keep them up and they were relegated from the Premier League after three years in the top flight, and will return to Championship football between August 2012 and May 2013. Wolves had needed three points to guarantee their survival, but they were powerless to prevent Manchester City, still in the hunt to win the title, who scored goals from Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri.

Wolves had been abysmal since they sacked Mick McCarthy (the day after losing 5-1 to Black Country rivals West Brom), and under new boss Terry Connor, they had not won a single game out of nine, and had drawn two of those (against Newcastle and Sunderland).

Since the Premier League began, prior to 2009 Wolves had only spent one season in it, 2003-04, when they were instantly relegated. They had finished 15th in the 2009-10 season, and had avoided relegation on the last day of the previous campaign despite losing to Blackburn. However, they weren't lucky enough this season.

Wolves have three games to go this season in the Premier League, against Swansea on Saturday, a home match with Everton on 6 May, and a trip to the DW Stadium on the final day to face Wigan, and then they drop back into the second tier of English football for the 2012-13 season.

Good luck in the Championship, Wolves!
