Steven Gerrard scored after four minutes (which viewers watching ITV in HD missed) but Clint Dempsey scored an equalizer for the USA after a blunder from Robert Green, who was dropped as a result.

England then drew 0-0 with Algeria, but then beat Slovenia 1-0 to get out of the group stages. However, they lost 4-1 to Germany in the last 16.
